... that The Homestead Act written into law on January 1, 1863 allowed anyone to file for 160 acres of free land. If you dug a well, fenced it, plowed ten acres and built a house on it (oh yeah - you also had to live on it!), it was yours at the end of five years.
But don't run out to do it - The Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 ended homesteading. Alaska retained it until 1986.
The last person to receive land under this act was Kenneth Deardorff.
